This week, the children and young people at Kijana Kwanza, have been learning about hydroponic farming – a time and water-efficient method of growing food, without the need for soil or pesticides.
In the garden, Teacher Juma has constructed a mini hydroponic system to pilot the scheme. After germinating the seeds in a tray, the saplings are placed in the holes of a water-pipe, with the roots dangling in a nutrient rich solution, concocted in Teacher Juma’s make-shift laboratory.
Agriculture is the largest contributor to Tanzania’s GDP, but there is still huge potential for growth. If successful, we plan to grow all our vegetables in this way, cutting costs and becoming self-sufficient.
